4C Wash Day Routine (Post-Big Chop + Hair Shedding Recovery)
by Diana, Founder of Color + Blow

About a year ago, I decided to cut all my hair off. Actually twice. Why? Dealing with low iron and anemia from fibroids, I was shedding so much that I knew I had to start over. My hair was telling me something my body already knew and it was time to take the wellness journey that I had already started to another level and actually do more of what it meant to take care of yourself from the inside out.
Today, I’m in the thick of my regrowth journey, and I’ve built a wash day routine that’s helped me strengthen and protect my 4C hair. Now, I'm not usually a hair typing kinda girl, but I recognize that it helps people when they have sort of a baseline to think about when it comes to choosing products and routines that work best for their hair.
Here’s exactly how I do it:
🔁 Wash Day Frequency: Every 7–14 days
I try to wash weekly, but life happens, and I sometimes stretch it to two weeks. The key is paying attention to my scalp, itchiness, buildup, or dryness tells me it’s time.
🧼 Step 1: Cleanse with Moisture in Mind
-
I gently rub the bar directly into my hair, but you can also lather it into your hands first, then apply the suds directly to your hair. It's a preference thing.
-
I massage with my fingertips to stimulate circulation and lift buildup especially important after wearing any kind of protective styles.
-
Rinse thoroughly with warm water to open the cuticle and allow moisture to get into your hair in the next steps.
💡 Why this matters: After shedding from anemia, I didn’t want anything harsh. This shampoo bar gives me a clean, hydrated start without stripping my hair. Healthier ingredients is why I stated the brand in the first place, but who knew it would have even more meaning after experiencing my own challenges.

🧴 Step 2: Deep Condition & Detangle
-
Product: Color + Blow Conditioner Bar
-
I glide the conditioner bar directly onto my hair and the product comes off into your hair really well.
- I use the Felicia Leatherwood Detangling Brush to gently detangle from ends to roots while the conditioner is still in.
-
Double Condition Method: After the first application of conditioner, I very lightly rinse, reapply conditioner, and then detangle again for extra softness. You'll really feel the difference in your hair. So manageable.
-
When I have time, I swap this step out for a steam treatment. The steam helps open up my hair cuticle and deeply hydrates my hair. I generally do 30 minutes, but if you have more time.. go for it!
💧 Step 3: Lock in Leave-In Moisture
-
Product: Lightweight Leave-In (personal fave, depending on the season). Here used the Kenra Lightweight Pearl Detangler.
-
I spray it all over my hair and brush it through with the detangling brush before styling.
-
This step helps seal in the moisture from the conditioner and preps my hair for styling.
🌀 Step 4: Style & Protect (Mini Twists)
-
Styling Product: Moisturizing mousse (to avoid flakes) and keep my hair light weight. Here I used The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam
-
I eyeball small sections, I don't part for this and do mini twists, my go-to protective style right now.
-
These help reduce manipulation, preserve moisture, and give my hair a break.
-
I wear the twists for half the week, then take them out for a soft, defined twist-out for the remainder.
💡 Why twists? They’re low stress, perfect for the gym, and it's like I get two styles in one.
🌱 Post-Wash Care
-
I sleep in a satin bonnet or use a silk pillowcase to protect my hair at night.
-
The steam from the shower helps me to refresh my hair during the week. After a shower i'll either add tiny bit of the mousse for shine or a little light oil on my fingertips to refresh the twist-out and keeps ends from drying out between washes.
🎯 Final Thoughts
My wash day has become a routine, not a chore. Sometimes i feel like doing it more than others but always love the outcome. What started with cutting it all off became a chance to regrow with thought… with cleaner ingredients, intentional care, and products I created along with a few others because I needed them.
